32,000 contraband cigarettes were discovered on Saturday by Customs Officials stationed at the Airport, and Customs Officials from the Enforcement Unit.
A passenger on a flight from Moscow was flagged by the Customs Officials after their luggage passed through the X-ray machine in the customs area. A physical search yielded contraband cigarettes and 16,000 cigarettes were seized.
Customs said that passenger, a Moldovan national, stated that the cigarettes were not destined for Malta, but for Spain and that he was in fact departing for Spain later on in the day.
An additional luggage piece was left unclaimed on the carousel, which, upon inspection by the officials, turned out to belong to the same passenger, and another 16,000 contraband cigarettes were removed.
Customs informed the Police Economic Crime Unit, who placed the passenger under arrest. The Moldovan passenger is expected to be arraigned in Court in the coming hours.
