The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela, has launched two awareness campaigns for primary and secondary schools in Gozo and Malta, on the occasion of the 50-year anniversary of Malta’s intervention on the Law of the Sea at the UN.
The campaigns are in relation to the preservation and the protection of our oceans. The Minister Carmelo said that, “our Seas and Oceans are the cradle of the world and the cradle of life. Our life depends on them, like we depend on food, water and oxygen in the air.”
He added that, “therefore, it is essential for all of us to, whilst using the sea’s natural resources, we do not forget our equal responsibility to continue to strengthen the protection of its biodiversity for the sake of present and future generations.”
“You are the ones representing these generations and shaping your own future by making a positive and tangible difference through your innovative ideas to protect our seas and oceans,” continued Minister Abela.
This awareness-raising campaign is but one of a series of events to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Dr Arvid Pardo’s speech at the United Nations.
His doctrine eventually led to a 15-year process which brought about the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which is the body of international law of the sea that is still used to this day.
All schools around Gozo and Malta will be able to participate in this awareness-raising campaign by submitting their paintings and writings.
Further information on these campaigns will be circulated officially to all schools via the Ministry for Education and Employment.
