Gozo’s extremely popular New Year’s Eve celebrations, are being held in Victoria for the twelfth consecutive year, in collaboration between the Victoria Local Council and the Ministry for Gozo.
This special evening of celebration and entertainment has now become an established event on the island’s cultural calendar and always attracts a large audience of all ages.
The announcement was made during a press conference which was addressed by the Minister for Gozo, Dr Justyne Caruana, Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Valletta 2018, Dr Deo Debattista, MTA Chairman Dr Gavin Gulia and the Victoria Local Council Mayor Dr Samuel Azzopardi.
Dr Samuel Azzopardi said that this is the tenth edition of ‘New Year’s Eve in the City,’ which year on year is becoming a major event on the island attracting both locals, Maltese and tourists who choose Gozo to celebrate the New Year.
The Mayor of Victoria continued by thanking all the stakeholders that help make this event such a success, especially the MTA and the Ministry for Gozo.
Dr Gulia said that the Malta Tourism Authority is committed in sporting such initiatives especially in the shoulder months.
“Such activities form part of the Authority’s strategy in attracting more tourist in Malta and Gozo and for 2018 the MTA is aiming to bring over more than 2.3 million tourists,” he said.
Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Deo Debattista spoke about the role that Gozo will play during next year’s Valletta 18 celebrations. ‘Gozo will have an important role to play during 2018. We absolutely did not want the title of European Capital for Culture to be only associated with Valletta.”
Dr. Debattista explained that, “during this unique year, 200 out of the 400 events will take places outside Valletta, 28 of which will be held in Gozo during Valletta 2018.”
“This was all possible because Gozo experienced an investment of over €1,800,000. Gozo is indeed a cultural gem which can compete with any other historic city,’ he said.
Ministry for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana said that the Ministry is committed to continue to invest in our distinctive product so that even in these days Gozo will be prepared to welcome all those who choose to spend the festive season in Gozo.
“These activities are the prelude of an exhaustive chain of cultural and entertainment events that will be hosted in Gozo in 2018,” said Minister Caruana.
“The Ministry for Gozo is investing heavily not only to promote Christmas in Gozo but on other major events that will be launched through the coming year,” added Justyne Caruana.
Dr Caruana continued by saying that the main aim is to create a joyful atmosphere for everyone, from children to elderly and from youths to parents.
Minister Caruana urged the public to join in the festivities to celebrate the New Year together in the heart of Victoria.
The Ministry for Gozo’s collaboration with several Gozitan Local Councils, which embark on various activities during the year, was also mentioned during today’s presentation.
“This is certainly beneficial in promoting Gozo from different angles, which are all part of the unique and authentic product of the island,” said Dr Caruana.
The New Year’s celebrations will be held in Independence Square and St George’s Square, on Sunday, the 31st of December, from 10pm till 2am and will feature The New Victorians, JJoy and Friends live, MAE, DCapitals and Strait Ahead.
