A disused quarry in San Lawrenz Gozo, has to today been granted planning permission by the Planning Board, for its “rehabilitation and subsequent use for agricultural purposes.”
The quarry, with a surface area of approximately 21,000m2, is located on the coastal western fringe of the island, an area known as Ta’ Habel Lazz, in the limits of San Lawrenz, and was subject to 30 years of mineral extraction, which was completely exhausted in 1985.
The Planning Authority said that the project will be carried out in three phases, starting with infilling of the quarry with inert waste material. Phase 2 will include the deposition of soil to a minimum depth of 30-40cm, which will be followed by its conservation.
