During a question and answer session on Gvern li Jisma, the Minister for Gozo, Justyne Caruana, discussed the possibility of adding an additional ferry to take the Gozo Channel fleet up to a total of four.
The extra ferry would facilitate expanding the number of crossings between the two islands to cope with the demand which has increased over the past few years.
Commenting on this new proposal, the Gozo University Group said that it believes that it would be a very good idea as the shuttle service could still operate even when a ferry is in for repair.
The GUG added that he project would entail improvements at Mgarr Harbour to accommodate this fourth ferry, and that whilst this would be a good idea, it is not a long-term solution.
The results of a survey conducted recently by the GUG show that students would rather have a fast-ferry service than a fourth ferry.
The GUG concluded by saying that short-term solutions should not be used to to try and make up for a long-term problem, and that it believes that only the long-awaited tunnel will solve the problem adequately.
