Gozo College San Lawrenz Primary completes tree planting projectGozo College San Lawrenz Primary School has recently participated and completed a tree planting project sponsored through the LEAF/ Nature Trust FEE Malta/ Global Forest Fund /HSBC Water Programme- Catch the Drop Campaign.

The school said that the idea behind this project was two fold: to increase pupil’s awareness of the green world; and to help them draw coherent and beneficial decisions, now, and even better, when adults – with regards to trees.

When the school received the green light about the project, they asked the pupils to decide which trees they were able to plant.

The school also asked the opinion of an expert in plants and tress, within EcoGozo – Mr. Stephen Mifsud.

He helped the pupils choose many types of Maltese trees which they would be able to plant. “Our condition was that any trees need to fruit during the September-June period, the time when the pupils will be at school,” the school said.

The trees selected by the school for planting were: naspli, sweet oranges, mandarins, mulberry, pomegranate and olive trees.
The area earmarked for the planting of these trees was in the orchard around the school. This area had contained large empty spaces. Old fruit trees are also present in this orchard.

The pupils were involved in all the stages of the project: the planning of the garden, i.e. where the trees should be planted, even during the planting ceremony, parents and grandmothers were also present.

The school said that the thing which would guarantee the completion and continuation of this project was the setting up of the drip irrigation system. “In fact, it was essential to have one. This will prove its worth during the hot and dry summer days.”
