The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be in Gozo this Saturday, at the Astra Theatre, for a concert which will see it tackle three great works from Russian composers, under the direction of Wayne Marshall.
The concert opens with the overture to Borodin’s famous opera Prince Igor before Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan joins the orchestra for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.
A disastrous premiere of his First Symphony had sent Rachmaninoff into a deep depression and shaken his confidence.
Therapy helped him recover his mood, and his successful Second Symphony his sense of self-worth as a symphonist.
The concert is taking place on Saturday, the 25th of November, at the Astra Theatre in Victoria, starting at 8.00pm. The programme will be as follows:
Wayne Marshall – Conductor
Narek Hakhnazaryan – Cello
Aleksandr Borodin – Prince Igor Overture
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op.33
Sergei Rachmaninoff – Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op.27
