Go issues update on submarine cable fault

Go cable fault updateIn a statement issued this morning GO said that engineers and members of staff were implementing contingency measures together with the other owners of a submarine cable Vodafone, with the aim of starting to restore broadband Internet services. This is being done following the international submarine fibre-optic cable outage caused in the Telecom Italia cable linking Malta to Sicily.

They said that the fault will continue resulting in a limited or restricted Internet access which is expected to improve throughout the day.

Telecom Italia has confirmed to Go that the fault in the cable has been localised underwater 120 kilometres of cable away from Catania. The submarine cable is 245 kilometres in length between Catania and St George’s Bay.

GO has initiated measures to start rectification of the fault via internationally-contracted parties specifically pre-assigned over the years to intervene in such circumstances. More details on this will be released later on in the day.

GO also said that they have successfully rolled out its contingency plan in order to provide international voice backup service via a microwave link with Sicily.

The company stated that they would like to apologise for any inconveniences caused, and assure its customers that it is doing its utmost to have the service restored back to normal as early as possible.
