Social housing projects will be implemented both in Gozo and Malta, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Social Accommodation, said in a statement today.
It added that it “strongly denies” reports in the media today, which it said “wrongly alleges” that there are “no social housing projects for Gozo.”
The Secretariat said that “specifically, for Gozo, the Ministry for Gozo is working on a new project for the construction of new social housing units. The proposed site is already identified and plans are drawn up.”
“Also, through Nikru biex Nassistu scheme, the Housing Authority is expected to have another 15 apartments in Gozo at its disposal to be used for social housing purposes in 2018,” the Secretariat added.
The Secretariat went on to say that, “this will be the first investment in Gozo social housing after 25 years, 20 years of them under previous administration.”
“The 2003 project refers to affordable accommodation, that is apartments sold at a discount and not allocated to social cases with a low rent,” it said.
The Secretariat argued that, “in reality, this Government will be addressing social housing in Gozo which last benefited from investment in 1992”
It remarked that, “apart from increasing the supply of housing units, other initiatives are being delivered for Maltese and, of course, Gozitans.”
The Secretariat concluded by saying that they will include among others, helping low-income families to become property owners through a scheme with local banks which ensures support for those who, without Government assistance, would not qualify for a loan.
