Gozo College Middle School is once again working on a large project, which is being organised by the school’s Ekoskola Committee.
This year the students are promoting the use of local resources by harvesting the Carob Tree.
Following the huge success of the We Eat Responsibly project ‘Foraging,’ for the second consecutive year, the school will be participating in the We Eat Responsibly programme, combined with this year’s LEAF investigation and the Litter Less Campaign.
In late summer a group of students, together with link teachers, met early morning before school, to bake the carobs for use in various recipes through the year.
This month EkoSkola Committee members and year 8 students prepared carob syrup and carob powder. it was a long process, spread over 3 days, but the students showed great enthusiasm for the task.
They had to weigh the carobs, measure exact amounts of water to add, prepare herbs for the syrup, clean glass jars they had brought to school, fill the jars, remove seeds from carob pods and grind the carob pods into powder – it was a busy time!
The school said that these products will be used during its Open Day to be held on the 24th of November.
