The University of Third Age Gozo opens its new academic year

“The Ministry for Gozo strongly supports the concept of active ageing and wants to see it strengthened in Gozo,” so stated the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana at the opening of the new academic year the University of Third Age Gozo.
The University of the Third Age opened with a Mass at the Gozo U3A Centre on the University Campus in Ghajnsielem. The curriculum includes sessions related to medical topics, literature, history and geographical information.
Dr Caruana said that the concept of U3A can be strengthened and expanded further by introducing new services and classes, and this, with the full collaboration of the University.
Through these sessions, the elderly are not only provided with useful academic information, but they are also being active, meeting new people and socialising, as well as being able to share their experiences, said the Minister. She added that it is encouraging them to participate fully in society.
Minister Caruana reiterated the commitment of the Ministry for Gozo to offer the best opportunities for the elderly, enabling them to remain active, in the full spirit of the National Strategic Policy for Active Ageing.
“It is the duty of the government to offer all possible support to this strategy so that it is carried out for the benefit of the elderly and the University of the Third Age is an important tool in its implementation,” concluded the Minister for Gozo.
Also present for the occasion was Prof. Marvin Formosa – Director of the University of the Third Age, and Head of the Department of Gerontology, who urged the elderly to take advantage of this initiative as an aid to keeping themselves active. Professor Formosa also thanked the Ministry for Gozo for its continued support in this area.
