Preparations and final rehearsals are in full swing at the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre of Victoria, Gozo, where one of the best-loved musicals – Fiddler on the Roof – will be staged in early November.
This musical is being produced jointly by the Don Bosco Oratory and Chorus Urbanus Productions.
The musical Fiddler on the Roof, with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book by Joseph Stein, is set in a village in imperial Russia in 1905.
It is based on the book Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem.
Tevye, the father of five daughters, is at the centre of the story, with his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family’s lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters and their choices in life, as well as with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.
The Fiddler on the Roof original Broadway production opened in 1964, and was the first musical theatre to surpass 3,000 performances in its first run. The musical won nine Tony Awards, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography.
The highly successful 1971 film adaptation of the musical enjoyed enduring international popularity including in Malta. The film adaptation won also three Oscars.
Fiddler on the Roof has been staged in the best theatres across the globe. And now thanks to the license and relevant permits from Music Theatre International of London, it is now coming to Gozo.
The musical will be staged live in English on the stage of the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre in Gozo, on Saturday, the 4th of November at 7.30pm, and Sunday, the 5th of November at 2.30pm (matinee show) with the last performance on the following Sunday, the 12th of November at 5.30pm.
The organisers said that “this musical will be surely one of the best musical productions ever to be staged at the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre of Gozo.”
The musical is a 2.5 hour production of good music, catchy songs, dance and witty moments. Its best loved popular songs include “Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “To Life” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”
The best of Gozitan talent will be show-cased in this musical. Main parts will be played by Noel Galea as Tevye and Maria Cassar as Golde. Special guest star in this production will be Malta’s renowned violinist George Curmi (Puse).
Other characters will be interpreted by Ruth Portelli, Fabian Galea, Antonella Rapa and Lara Xerri Mompalao together with a 100-strong cast, including musicians, singers and dancers.
The organisers aid that the Musical Director is Dr. John Galea, who is also the director of “one of the best choirs in the Maltese Islands” – the Chorus Urbanus, which is in fact the back-bone of this musical production. Jamie Camilleri is the artistic director of the show, whilst choreographers are Dr. Simone Grech and Frances Zammit.
