October is the month dedicated to the elderly, and the Ministry for Gozo marked the occasion by the opening of a new day care centre for the elderly in Qala, made possible through an agreement with the Local Council.
The Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana inaugurated the centre, saying that it is the fourth of its kind in Gozo, following on from those of Xewkija, Ta’ Cawla in Victoria and Sannat, with another planned for Zebbug,
More such services are planned in Gozo for the future. “There has been a good response from the elderly residents of Gozo to these services, particularly in those centres that provide training courses, such as on the use of computers and the internet,” said the Minister. “It is important that elderly people feel part of the community and remain active in their daily lives.”
She added that, “as promised, the Government will continue to give priority to this area, not least in Gozo where a new home for the elderly will be opening in Ghajnsielem. This will make the total number of beds available in Gozo to 500.”
The Minister thanked the Qala Local Council, led by Mayor Paul Buttigieg for the initiative of the new centre.
The Qala Mayor, speaking during the inauguration, thanked the Ministry for Gozo for the valuable contribution of the day care centre provided for the community of Qala, and urged the elderly to make use of this free service .
