August visitor numbers up, with most staying in private accommodation

There was in increase of 12.2 per cent in the number of inbound visitors for August, with the figure estimated at 288,033, the National Statistics Office said today.
It said that 259,392 inbound tourist trips were for holiday purposes, and a further 7,839 were for business purposes.
Tourists from EU Member States numbered 245,390, an 11.5 per cent increase compared to the corresponding month in 2016.
The number of nights spent was also up on last year, this time by 8.5 per cent, surpassing 2.5 million nights, The NSO noted that the largest share of guest nights (53.4 per cent) was spent in private accommodation.
Expenditure by tourists was estimated at €299.1 million, an increase of 10.4 per cent on last year, the NSO said.
Tourist trips inbound from January to August reached 1,526,092, the NSO said that this was an increase of 16.6 per cent on last year. Total nights spent went up by 10.4 per cent, surpassing 11.2 million nights.
The tourism expenditure during that period reached €1.3 billion, 13.1 per cent higher than that recorded last year. Total expenditure per capita stood at €857, a decrease of 3.0 per cent when compared to 2016.
