“Malta should follow the example of Kenya with regard to plastic. Kenya has totally banned by law, the use of plastic, to wrap foodstuffs and for shopping,”.Zminijietna – Voice of the Left said in a statement today.
It called for new measures to address plastic litter problems, saying that, “Malta should also eliminate outright the use of plastic from the shopping arena. The use or selling of plastic bags, carrier bags, or any other form of plastic to carry stuff should be totally prohibited by law.”
On the problem of plastic drink bottles and plastic litter issues, Zminijietna called on the Government and The Ministry for the Environment and Resources, to introduce a money-back return scheme for plastic bottles.
Zminijietna remarked that, “through such a scheme, Norway collects 97% of all the plastic generated. This can also be applied to glass bottles and aluminium beverage cans.”
This Saturday, the `Let’s Do It’ National Clean-up Campaign event ‘ is taking place in Gozo and Malta, with Ghasri and Nadur taking part in Gozo.
