Xaghra Basilica welcomes return of the statue of Maria Bambina

Xaghra will this evening welcome the return of the statue of Maria Bambina, following its restoration by the company Atelier del Restauro in Malta.
The conservation of the fine 19th century crowned statue of Maria Bambina, was carried out by conservator Valentina Lupo. Xaghra Parish is dedicated to Our Lady of Victories and is known locally as ‘il-Bambina.’
The statue was commissioned in 1878 to the French company ‘Galard et Fils’ from Marseilles.
This evening at 7.00pm a carcade leaves from near the church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Mgarr. The statue of the Bambina arrives on 8th September Avenue, Xaghra at 8.00pm where there will be a prayer vigil with Bishop Mario Grech.
This will be followed by a pilgrimage to the Basilica, saying the Rosary and hymn singing. There will then be a Eucharistic Benediction on the Square.
This is followed by the solemn entrance of the Bambina into the Basilica, where the statue will be placed on its throne.
A detailed presentation explaining the restoration work carried out will be held on the 3rd September in the evening.
Atelier del Restauro Ltd. is a company formed between Maltese and Italian conservators who are specialised in the field of conservation of works of art.
