Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, has said said that this year, as was the case in previous years, the Ministry for Gozo has distributed a substantial amount of palm fronds to registered Gozitan fishermen.
She explained that this year, for the first time, the distribution of palm fronds to fishermen will be free of charge.
The Minister was on a site visit to where workers from the Ministry are cutting fronds on some of the many trees found around the island.
Because a number of the trees have been infected with the Red Palm Weevil, fishermen are finding it increasingly difficult to collect the amount needed to prepare the apparatus for laumpuki fishing, Dr Caruana said. “An action plan is already underway to identify any infected trees to ensure they are treated.”
Justyne Caruana concluded by saying that the free distribution of palm fronds will continue every year to help reduce the costs faced by Gozitan fishermen.
