Can UK citizens donate? Have heard we can not donate.

I am Maltese who lived in UK for 40 years and I was refused too because I have been a very long time in UK. After an operation my mother developed MRSA at the then St. Lukes hospital. Our family were angry but a senior nurse said that MRSA was brought in this country by a UK citizen instead of admitting that the theatre was not cleaned properly

I was told that if you lived in UK during the 1970s/1980s when the BSE problem started you cannot give blood here because there is a chance you could be carrying the cells which eventually develop into Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease for which there is no cure. These could be transferred to the eventual recipient with tragic consequences.
