The Gozo Ceramics Festival has been inaugurated by the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, taking place next Saturday, the 5th of August in Xlendi, from 7.30pm onwards.
The Minister showed her appreciation for all the work carried out to make this annual event such a success and expressed her wish that the festival continues to grow and strengthen.
Synonymous with Xlendi Bay at this time of the year, the Festival, which is now in its fifth year, and very much part of the cultural calender, promises the public numerous exhibits, where ceramic artists, from the fine arts field as well as skilled craftsmen, demonstrate their talents and skills in public.
To complement the Festival a Collective Ceramics Art Exhibition is also taking place at the St Patrick’s Hotel.
There will also be live acoustic music session by Mae – Mae is a four piece band consisting of Erika on Lead Vocals, Manuel on guitar, Christopher on Keyboards and Alan on percussions/backing vocals.
The band plays a mix of different covers from the all time favourite classics to recent and modern tunes.
Apart from the ceramics, visitors to Xlendi will have the chance to taste the different foods on offer and there will be a hands-on area for children to get their hands dirty, this is always one of the popular spots for families!
Also during the evening the Xlendi Administrative Committee will be illuminating the bay with the magical fjakkolata, when hundreds of candles will be lit around the bay and on private balconies.
The restored underground grain mill and silos will also be open for the public. During the years 1954/1955, the Xlendi mill was excavated into the cliffs, situated behind the Mount Carmel church.
The excavation was a huge undertaking, which consisted firstly of an entrance tunnel, some 30 meters long, 2.5 meters high and 3 meters wide, leading into a large chamber. This chamber was divided into three floors and housed the storage, grinding and milling equipment.
Gozo Ceramics Festival is taking place on Saturday, the 5th of August from 7.30pm onwards. It is being held in collaboration with the Gozo Culture Office and Munxar Local Council, and the participation of the St Patrick’s Hotel and artistic director of the festival – ceramist Joan Haber.
