Following the recent coverage of the Nadur Cemetery saga we have now received the following letter from one of our regular contributors – Mr James A Tyrrell.
“What hope is there for the country when even the church is twisting the law to their own ends? I refer of course to the Nadur cemetery disgrace. Once again the Mepa case officers report in this case has been ignored. Once again I ask the question, ‘what is the point in employing case officers if their advice is going to be ignored every time?’
This is another perfect example of the Catholic church assuming that they are above the law, and being allowed to get away with it. Who do they think they are? Fr Muscat has now failed for the seventh time in a row to appear before the Mepa appeals board because he is in Australia. And is the fact that he is not due to return from Australia until March 4th, the same day as the next appeal is scheduled for another coincidence? This is just a ploy by the Catholic Church to get their way and to hell with the local farmers.
Prime Minister Gonzi said he was going to reform Mepa and Minister Debono has been constantly talking about an Eco-Island concept, when are we going to see something being done? Can I suggest a very simple change to the law here? My suggestion is that if an appeal has been lodged no development should be allowed to take place until such times as the outcome of the appeal is known. This is how it would be done in a normal society. What is the point of having an appeals process if the church can simply decide not to turn up and be allowed to carry on with the work anyway? It’s a complete joke.
I think the fact that a 450-strong petition delivered to Gozo Bishop Mario Grech back in February 2007 by the local people has never even been acknowledged speaks volumes as to how much the church cares about their opinion. And why is this 600-grave cemetery so necessary? Well it seems according to the church that everyone from Malta is just dying to be buried in Nadur, when the actual figures are in fact 2 to 5 burials a year.
The church should come clean and admit that they couldn’t care less about the local farmers. Nor do they care about the destruction of the local water supply from the fresh springs. What they do care about above all else is the at least one million Euro they will earn from selling holes in the ground!”

It just makes me sick to hear these type of attitudes coming from every walk of life, all this means to me is NO RESPECT for Joe citizen
Why is it that in a few minutes the Mepa Board can overturn the case officer`s report when he would have conducted his findings on a much more longer and informative way? This is something I can never swallow.
This might be because as once said by a prominent architect from Malta THAT HE HAS GOT THE GIFT TO CONVINCE THE BOARD. What a joke.
Mr. Tyrrell has a way of hitting the nail on the head.
It is pretty obvious that on these islands, there are different laws for different entities/persons. This is just a small example where local wishes are completely ignored on the strength that the church knows better. The church seems to be forgetting that without the people there would be no church! It appears to be intent on reverting back to the total power they had in the middle ages. Is the church going to support those farmers whose living they are about to destroy – or are they waiting for the poor farmers to buy a few graves! Shame on the irresponsible gentleman who is holidaying in Australia – he obviously doesn’t care about his flock or his village! Perhaps he should just stay where he is as do we really want someone like that back on the island?
Of course MEPA is also to blame, as are the PM and Minister for Gozo.
Despite various promises from the above, we are back in square one as far as the environment goes – or worse!
