Minister for Health Chris Fearne has announced that a trial programme in four locations will begin next week for those who suffer with Type 2 diabetes and are on insulin, to start benefiting from four free testing sticks a day to check sugar levels.
He explained that as from Monday the pilot project will be in four localities in Gozo and Malta: In Gozo it will be Kercem and in Malta: Gudja, St Julians, Mgarr (Malta), for those who are already listed with the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme.
The Minister said that in this country there are around 35,000 people (10% of the population) who are diabetic, with 6,000 of them dependent on insulin.
“Last year all patients with Type 1 diabetes were given four free testing sticks a day to check diabetes readings. While next year it is expected to extend the service to all those with Type 2 diabetes,” the Minister said. “Apart from the sticks, all who are entitled will also have a new machine for reading the result.”
From tomorrow, those patients who are entitled to the sticks, will start receiving notification letters at their homes.
