Celebrations for the Feast of St George get underway this weekSt George’s Basilica in Victoria will be celebrating the Feast of St George this week, with the festivities culminating next Sunday, the third Sunday of July – Gozo’s annual St George’s Day.

St George’s Day is also celebrated on the official day, April the 23rd, when it is commemorated all over the world, and his festive memory is kept in Gozo and Malta, as it is held in the homes and churches of the Christian East and West.

While the April day is exclusively devotional and mostly confined to the day’s internal church celebrations, the July feast is spread out over several days of external festivities, as well as those that take place within the church.

This evening there is a children’s party in St George’s Square, while the traditional feast dinner is being held in Republic street outside the La Stella Band club, with entertainment by the Tramps.

On Monday evening it is the horse races, starting at 7.00pm along Republic Street, the prizes will be presented by the Minister for Gozo, Dr Justyne Caruana and the Mayor of Victoria Dr Samuel Azzopardi.

On Wednesday night at midnight there will be a – Spectacle of Flame – in St George’s Square.

Then on Saturday night at midnight there will be a synchronised grand pyrotechnic display – Night of the Stars – at Republic Street.

Traditional processions with the statues, band marches and fireworks take place starting from Tuesday evening.
