Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Clint Camilleri, has visited tomato producers in Gozo, as well the Gozitano Centre, a Gozitan agriculture co-operative.
During the visits the Parliamentary Secretary viewed their various operations and listened to comments on the challenges they face. He praised the various initiatives that these producers are taking in order to continue to raise the level of the Gozitan product on offer.
The Parliamentary Secretary mentioned how the Government would move forward the proposal pledged in the electoral manifesto so that income tax for farmers is abolished altogether.
Currently farmers pay 3% tax, however the electoral promise was that they would no longer have to pay anything, the same as fishermen – who pay no tax. Camilleri said that “this is so that the Government continues to incentivise this important sector of our islands.”
Mr Camilleri promised that over time as Parliamentary Secretary, he will not only continue with these visits and meetings with producers on a regular basis, but will also be meeting directly with farmers and fishermen to listen and address the problems and challenges that they encounter on a daily basis.
