Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Investments Minister Austin Gatt and Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, met over the weekend to launch three new schemes aimed at creating more jobs in Gozo.
Firstly they announced a revision of the Cottage Industry Rules so that part-time skilled workers who earn Lm5,000 or less a year will become VAT-exempt.
The second scheme is intended to provide help in the employment of ‘disadvantaged’ workers such as mothers returning to work, single parents and those over 50. This will be achieved by an increase in Employment and Training Corporation and Malta Enterprise aid schemes which will pay up to half of the first year’s salary of people who are employed in this category.
The third scheme is aimed at helping businesses invest in Gozo through an investment aid grant that will be linked to the jobs that are created. Businesses utilising this scheme will be eligible for tax credits under the Business Promotion Act.
In addition Lm40,000 from the Good Causes Fund will be used to help create new activities that will attract more people to visit Gozo between October and May of every year.
