Speaking in Gozo, MEP Alfred Sant said that the European identity and values are in a process which is seeking to bridge what is common to all Europeans and what is proper to each European nation. “This is being done while another force, globalisation, is impinging upon the continent with its pressures and demands,” he said.
Dr Sant had been invited by the Foundation Philosophy Sharing Gozo to address a meeting on ‘The Experience of a European Identity’ at the Circolo Gozitano, Gozo.
The Maltese MEP said that the process is still ongoing and maintained that only time can say whether, in the context of global change, “the interrelation between the European common heritage and the identity and values of each nation will create a truly continental space,” said Dr Sant.
“The European identity and values are now set as a standard of morals and behaviour after a long history of traditions, politics and social control.” remarked Dr Sant.
