AD has called on Minister Austin Gatt to stop misleading the public and declaring that the ‘Foresta 2000′ site is not going to be affected by his plans to build a new road in Ghadira.
AD Spokesperson for Sustainable Development and Local Government Carmel Cacopardo said, “The Minister cannot bring up the excuse of EU funds at the eleventh hour to just forge ahead with such a project. It is crystal clear that there are no studies whatsoever. Instead of building useless roads there should be heavy investment in public transport, to create new modes of transport and upgrading roads to become more bicycle friendly. Instead of continuiing to insist on beach extension Minister Gatt should address the impacts of his proposals on the Ghadira Nature Reserve. It is clear to all that at the moment the existing road is protecting the nature reserve. Government should first address the main problem of protecting the reserve.”
AD Candidate for European Parliament Elections Yvonne Ebejer Arqueros added, “Future generations are conspicuously absent from this government’s plans. Its concept of development is deeply conservative and lacks innovation. We at AD will continue working to bring to Malta a green, modern European outlook to the term development. I want our children to be have cleaner air and open spaces. This piecemeal approach to so-called development must stop.”
Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party Chairperson and EP election candidate said, “The Maltese government and the PN should realize that using the word “green” in its propaganda material is not what makes a party or government green. Being truly green means proposing sustainable projects. AD’s priority is peoples’ quality of life in the widest sense of the word. After raising hopes so much before the general elections in March people are realising that they are getting more of the same.”
“We want to see all scientific studies on any development in the area. We can no longer be subjected to shotgun decisions with the excuse of EU money. Government should learn to think about deadlines years before and not at the last minute,” concluded Arnold Cassola.
