Between the setting and the rising sun – is the title of a photographic exhibition by Norbert Francis Attard, taking place in Gharb.
The exhibition, curated by Nikki Petroni, is part of the Valletta International Visual Arts (VIVA) Festival that serves as a platform for Maltese and international visual arts practitioners.
This year’s edition is unique because for the first time, the festival is also exhibiting work in Gozo.
Norbert Francis Attard’s work – Between the setting and the rising sun – comprises of photographic manipulations which serve as repositories of collective memory, local and international, that intentionally juxtapose diverse temporal happenings on singular planes of vision.
The artists said that each piece forms part of a series and is composed of multiples and repetitions that invoke a simultaneously familiar and unsettling feeling. Intertextuality shapes the image selection whilst respecting the individual significance of each piece.
War, violence, exile, truth, narcissism and injustice are all subjects that occupy the digital screens on a daily basis. It is the manner in which Attard presents the material that interferes with the quotidian sequence of their circulation. History is made visible and as a result it becomes relevant; a postmodern language for a utopian future.
During a visit to the exhibition, the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo, congratulated Mr Attard and expressed his satisfaction that an island as small as Gozo has so much to offer.
The exhibition, which is open for viewing tomorrow and Wednesday (11.00am – 2.00pm and 3.00pm – 6.00pm) is located at the META Foundation – Gozo Contemporary, 11 Mongur Street. Gharb, Gozo.
