In just under two weeks time the Gozo Ultra Trail will be back in Gozo, with the most scenic route in the Mediterranean encouraging people of all levels, including beginners, to take part.
Organised by Hellfire Events, the course is a coast-hugging running event of 50km/21km in a circumnavigation of the island, starting from Ghajnsielem.
The organisers said that it covers cliff edge single tracks, lush valleys and water courses, seaside salt pans, sandy beaches and rocky terrain, with around 1400m of elevation gain make it a perfect race for those attempting their first ultra or looking for a fast race
Race cut-off times are relaxed to encourage beginners to take part, and those wishing to enjoy the trail, rather than race it. Participants from over 20 countries took part in 2016.The 21km trail is run over the last part of the course, finishing in Ghajnsielem. Cyclists are encouraged to participate in the Mountain Bike Challenge that follows the 50km run route.
The event gets underway at 8:00am in Ghajnsielem and has a 10 hour cut-off time. The shorter 21km starts around 10.30am from a point between Ghasri/Marsalforn.
The Mountain Bike event starts around 11:00am from Ghajnsielem and is a non-competitive event. However, the organisers said, it’s possibly one of the toughest routes in the Mediterranean!
