A training course in the creation of designs using salt has been held over the last week, organised by the Gharb Local Council.
The training was given to students at the Gharb Local Council by Italian artist, Valentina Mammana, who hails from Noto in Sicily, and visited Gozo specifically for this innovative course.
The students were taught how to colour the salt and how to create a design on a small scale – in fact they were created on plates.
The finished designs are all related to the Passion of Christ and will be exhibited during the Easter festivities at the Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni band club which is located in Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna.
Last Sunday morning, the artist together with the students who attended for the course, met at the square to create a design on a larger scale in Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna. This type of art is the first of its kind being held in Malta.
They created a design in a six-metre diameter circle, using a total of 450kg of local salt. It includes Christ’s face, which was created with salt on a platform in the middle of the square. This is a `first’ for the Infiorata section in the village of Gharb, where instead of using flowers a new technique with salt was used.
The designs will be exhibited till the Monday after Easter Sunday.
