On Thursday the locality of San Lawrenz took another important step towards the establishment of the first `Dementia Friendly’ community.
The local business community were invited to attend a training session, the first of a series, with the aim of making their establishments “dementia friendly.”
Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana and and San Lawrenz Mayor Noel Formosa, addressed those present before the start of the training session, which was led by Mr Alex Gobey, Dementia Team Coordinator.
San Lawrenz residents took part in a public meeting in September last year, when the Parliamentary Secretary said that San Lawrenz was an ideal village to start this concept because of its small size, and due to the fact of the ageing population, it would act as a role model for other localities
The aim of the Dementia Friendly Village project is hat it will not only benefit elderly persons with dementia, but also their families and society as a whole, because the project will include extensive maintenance in the locality of San Lawrenz.
Works will include dedicated information signs and orientation, the playing field will be made more accessible to children, and to people with disability or mobility problems.
