The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses Council said that it had sent a notice to the Health Department for negotiations to start on a new sectoral agreement for nurses and midwives.
“Although this notice was sent more than 15 days ago, until now MUMN did not receive a date to kick off these negotiations. The last agreement was signed more than four years ago.”
The Council stated that nurses and midwives working all over Gozo and Malta “are waiting anxiously for this new sectoral agreement for various reasons mostly as it addresses shortage of nurses, professional development, salary adjustment and health and safety issues.”
The MUMN Council said that it is ready not to prolong these negotiations through weeks and weeks. “On its first negotiating day it is going to be made crystal clear that MUMN expects that a schedule of weekly meetings needs to be agreed on a framework of maximum three months so to arrive at a situation where both parties would know their position and take the necessary steps accordingly.”
MUMN Council concluded by saying that it has full support from the nurses and midwives who are constantly working in stressful and less favourably environment because of the shortage and the ever increasing demands.
