Gozitan fisherman made 14.2% of total landings in second half of 2016

During the second half of 2016, in terms of volume, landings by Gozitan fishermen comprised 14.2 per cent of the total landings. The wholesale value amounted to €653,463 or 13.0 per cent of the total value, the National Statistics Office said today.
On a national basis, the total volume of fish landings amounted to 1.4 million kilogrammes with a wholesale value of €5.0 million.
The volume of fish landings amounted to 1.4 million kilogrammes during the period under review. The main species landed were mackerel, dorado and swordfish which accounted for 53.2 per cent of the total landings.
The NSO said that from 2016 onwards, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture carried out more enforcement on the fishermen to declare all the fish sales including the direct sales. This had an impact on the declaration of fish landings.
Maltese fishermen landed 1.2 million kilogrammes, which accounted for 85.8 per cent of total landings and 87.0 per cent of the wholesale value. As regards to volume, the main species landed were mackerel, dorado and swordfish which made up 50.5 per cent of the landings.
