Gaulitana has said that it is pleased to announce a stellar cast for the production of Madama Butterfly, complementing Miriam Gauci’s return to gracing the stage.
She will be accompanied by Vincenzo Costanzo as Pinkerton. Featuring alongside Villazon, Kaufmann and Florez in the “Top 10 Tenors of the World” by OperaLife, the young tenor won the “Tenor New Generation” award. Praised for his typical Italian voice, Costanzo evokes the memory of the great Del Monaco.
Sharpless Will be interpreted by Alberto Mastromarino, an Italian baritone enjoying a fully-fledged career. He has performed at various prestigious venues, including Metropolitan, La Scala, Deutsche Opera and Teatro Liceu.
Rossana Rinaldi and Roberto Covatta will be Suzuki and Goro respectively. The mezzo-soprano boasts an impressive cv, hand-picked by Muti for La Scala’s season-opening and interpreting Carmen for Rai International. She sang Suzuki at San Carlo and Fenice, among others. Covatta returns to Gozo following his appearance as Pang in 2012. Recently, he has interpreted roles at l’Opera di Firenze and La Scala.
The cast is completed with Maltese singers who have become household names among local opera buffs. Louis Andrew Cassar will interpret Zio Bonzo, Joseph Lia shall be Il Commissario Imperiale whereas Yamadori will be sung by David Debono. Patricia Buttigieg will appear as Kate Pinkerton.
Colin Attard will conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra whereas the director Enrico Castiglione will be reviving his Taormina production, with costumes by Sonia Cammarata.
A Post-Opera Dinner with the Stars is also being organised in collaboration with Vini e Capricci. Chef George Borg and his team will prepare a culinary treat for patrons to savour in the presence of Miriam Gauci and Butterfly’s cast.
