The Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo has launched Carnival 2017. He said that as in every year, the Gozo Carnival attracts thousands of Maltese and Gozitans to the different events across the island, “thus the Carnival in Gozo is seen as an important cultural event.”
He said that official statistics show that at the end of the week of Carnival 2016, a total of 43,000 passengers had crossed over to Gozo. This success is achieved through planning, he said.
The main attractions, include the Nadur spontaneous Carnival and traditional carnival events organised in villages around Gozo. The Regional Carnival in Victoria, which starts on Friday with a Carnival parade, continues on Saturday morning and then in the evening, reaching its climax on Sunday afternoon with a parade in Republic Street. The carnival continues across the island on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th of Februry.
Minister Refalo stated that the purpose of the Ministry for Gozo is to continue to focus on the quieter months for tourism (shoulder months) to ensure that tourism increases throughout the whole year
The Minister said that Gozo is ready, as it is every year, to welcome the thousands of Maltese and tourists who choose to visit the island for Carnival time.
Dr Refalo thanked all the employees of Gozo Channel, the Police and Transport Malta, “who are so crucial over this important weekend.”
He also thanked everyone involved in the carnival, “who work tirelessly and voluntarily throughout the year and all the committees involved both in Gozo and Malta who have helped the Gozo Regional Carnival Gozo continue to grow.”
“The Ministry for Gozo remains committed to coordinate all activities undertaken within the Gozo Carnival, to make this a most pleasant experience and without problems or nuisance, despite the thousands of people who will be visiting the island,” he said.
