During a visit to the Xewkija Tigers FC, Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana, together with the managers of other Gozo clubs, in the presence of officials and athletes of Special Olympics Gozo, announced a new agreement with the Xewkija team.
“This agreement is aimed at fostering inclusion in a sporting spirit for everyone. Xewkija Tigers embrace inclusion in the true sense of the word because they have a member who, despite his disability, is also a promising member of Special Olympics Gozo,” said Dr Justyne Caruana.
“That is why the Parliamentary Secretariat embarked on this project to encourage sports bodies to be more inclusive and welcoming to the disabled on both participatory and professional levels,” she added.
Dr Caruana said that the fact that there will be logos for inclusiveness on official clothing as well as the grounds, will deliver a strong message, and eventually improve sports facilities making them more accessible.
“We want to convey the message by any means, that accessibility is the cornerstone of a just society, where sport is a very effective means by which everyone can take part in as community activities,” explained Justyne Caruana.
Dr Caruana praised Xewkija Tigers for their commitment and augured that the collaboration in this agreement will continue to grow and strengthen. The club facilities will also be available for Special Olympics Gozo to enable a sports training session each week.
The President of Xewkija Tigers FC Jeffrey Farrugia and club secretary Joseph Attard described the agreement as an historic and important one in the history of the club and the football team.
They thanked Dr Justyne Caruana for the support and agreement with the club and reiterated their commitment to further endeavours for inclusion in sport for everyone.
