The Malta Union of Teachers, in a statement, has said that it noted with satisfaction that Karen Mercieca – the Gozitan LSA unjustly accused of abuse related to a child with learning disabilities – has just been acquitted from all charges by the Court of Appeals.
The Union thanked everyone involved, in particular the law courts, members of the press who showed their support, involved lawyers, the government and the Public Service Commission.
The Union said that its next step is to ask for the immediate reintegration into the service of Karen Mercieca and to also ask for compensation for lost income over the last five years.
The MUT reiterated that as stated when the original sentence was published, “it is hoped that this will be an opportunity for everyone to learn from this experience so as not to repeat itself to the detriment of other educators.”
The appeal had been deferred by a Judge last September, following the acquittal of Karen Mercieca in November 2015 and the subsequent appeal by the Attorney General.
