Employees from the HSBC Birzebbugia Branch recently visited the turtles presently under rehabilitation and under the care of Nature Trust (Malta) as part of their HSBC CSR activities.
This special event was aimed at raising awareness and to promote the adoption of injured sea turtles which are currently in rehabilitation at San Lucjan Tower. The turtles adopted were – Tama (Hope), Luca and Lizzie.
Tama was found entangled in fishing lines and badly hit by a propeller – she lost a flipper as a result of the vessel hit and has been under rehab since September 2015. Luca and Lizzie were found with a fishing hook in the gullet during the summer months of this year. They were operated and hooks and lines removed. All three are now recovering and in good health.
A total of €300 in adoption proceeds was presented to Vincent Attard, Nature Trust President who was very pleased with the help and assistance offered. The funds will go towards the medication costs of these turtles.
Mr Attard said that the rehabilitation of each turtle can cost between €500 to €1200 per turtle. Turtles are released back to the wild once fully recovered. Turtles are today on the endangered list and face many problems due to pollution, climate change, etc.
Nature Trust (Malta) gave thanks to the HSBC Malta Foundation, as well as to a good number of branches and employees from other teams who supported this event.
