Premju Socjetà Gusta awards presentation ceremony 2016

On Saturday evening, to mark the occasion of the international day for disabled persons, the awards ceremony took place for Premju Socjetà Gusta 2016 – which are presented as a tribute to the people who work and show dedication in the field of disabled people.
This was the third edition of the award organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing and was held at the Portomaso Suite, the Hilton, Malta.
Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana said that this year there was a record number of nominations with 29 individuals and organisations. She said that this shows increased interest and appreciation for the work in this field.
The winners are:
Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2016 Disability – Rita Vella, and her husband Kevin Vella, who passed away a few months ago.
Award for Advocacy and Rights 2016 – Siggiewi Basketball School
Disability Action and Activism Award for 2016 – Matthew Giordmaina
Effort Award – Maria Pia Saliba of Gozo.
Two other awards were also presented to Fabian Fleri and Maria Zammit.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by Ivan Grech, Maestro Domenic Galea, Therese Caruana, Yanika Galea, Street Elements and Hypnotic Dancers. Athletes Mario Bonello and Naomi Axisa also took part, as well as a Special Olympics swimmer Charmaine Mifsud who recounted their experiences when they represented the country.
The theme of the show was inclusion, where disabled people were able to show their talents alongside professional artists on the same stage to pass a strong message in favour of ability and inclusion.
