Alternattiva Demokratika has demanded that the Maltese government stops immediately its bad habit of imposing illegal taxes on the Maltese people.
Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, said, “The Maltese government’s tax on the departure tax and the VAT on car registration have all been declared illegal by the European Union and have had to be stopped. However the Government has not refunded the Maltese taxpayer the illegal taxes collected on departure tax and car registration VAT for the periods 1st of May 2004 to 31st of October 2008.”
“Now the Government has backdated the new energy tariffs to 1st October, a practice which is unacceptable by any acccounting or rational standard.”
“If the government believes in consumer rights and a level playing field, it should prove its European credentials by immediately withdrawing the backdating of energy tariffs, and start working out a way of refunding other illegal taxes imposed in the recent past,” concluded Prof. Cassola.
