This summer the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps not only provided life guard services, they also carried out several underwater clean-up activities from various beaches around Gozo and Comino.
These included Ramla Bay, Mgarr ix-Xini, Hondoq Bay, Dwejra, Marsalforn and the Blue Lagoon in Comino.
A number of volunteers from the Gozo based Emergency Response and Rescue Corps used scuba gear equipment to search and recover rubbish from the sea bed.
During the clean ups large amounts of rubbish were recovered, that had been dumped into the sea. There were empty plastic and glass bottles, aluminium cans, paper, clothes, damaged umbrellas and car tyres.
The ERRC said that all the rubbish was separated and disposed of at the Gozo bring in sites.
The underwater clean-up project was made possible through financial aid from the `Be Active Scheme' promoted by Agenzija Zaghzagh.
