The Malta Tourism Authority has published an official price list, under contracts agreed with the concessions and operators for the hire of umbrellas and deckchairs for the Blue Lagoon and Santa Marija beaches on Comino.
Following complaints on various social media about the prices being charged, the MTA said operators must comply with the price list as shown.
"It is important that for each transaction a tax receipt is also given to the customer. In addition a notice with the list of prices will be installed under the respective zones by the Authority on both Comino beaches."The Authority said that it will "continue to carry out inspections to ensure that these requirements are being complied with as well as all other contractual obligations by the operators. The Authority reserves the right to withdraw any contract with immediate effect, should that not be the case."
The Malta Tourism Authority said contracts were signed in 2015 following a call, which was won by four operators. Among the obligations in the contract are clauses governing the amount of deckchairs in each zone assigned to them and the hire prices.
The Authority said that it is aware of the problems encountered in the past on Comino beaches. These include illegal operation on Cominotto and the garigue which is scheduled as a Natura 2000 site. These issues have been addressed, the MTA said.
The MTA urged the public who have been charged more than the list shown above, or who have not been issued with a fiscal receipt, should contact the Malta Tourism Authority on telephone numbers 22915452 or 22915453 from Monday to Saturday from 09: 00am to 17: 00pm and Sunday and Public Holidays between 09: 00am and 12:30 pm, or by e-mail on firstname.lastname@example.org .
