New utility tariffs equivalent to 194% surcharge – MLP

'national manifestation of courage'The Malta Labour Party Leader, Joseph Muscat, addressed a large crowd gathered in Valletta last night, in what the Labour Party has described as a ‘national manifestation of courage’ against the government’s decision to introduce new and revised utility tariffs.

The Labour Party Leader said that the new utility tariffs introduced by the government were equivalent to a surcharge of 194% and are being introduced at the worst possible time for the country.

The Labour Leader refuted the Prime Ministers claim that the activity was theatrics, saying that, “theatrics are made by those who fail to keep their promises.”

Dr Muscat added that the timing was the worst possible for the economy and that the government should have boosted the economy, put more money in the people’s pockets and encouraged the nation.

He went on to say that the wellbeing of the country demanded a change in direction. “We are not getting what we deserve,” he said.

Dr Muscat concluded by saying that he would make concrete proposals on how to address the current state of affairs when he replies to the budget in Parliament later today.
