The Ministry for Gozo said that the restoration project brings new life back to the Citadel and these summer activities are aimed at encouraging people to visit the fortification and to increase awareness about this renewed heritage.
The activities are called #CittadellaGozo the inaugural season and will be preceded by an awareness campaign on social media, local TV, billboard, through Ministry for Gozo, and travel and tourism sites.
The events are aimed at both local and cultural tourists. This campaign also includes the production of a booklet promoting the Citadel site, which is being delivered door to door with a programme of all the events,
#CittadellaGozo is also launching a CittadellaApp for smartphones, this app will be available for the the public to view as they tour the Citadel area through the free Wi-Fi provided throughout the area and offers the visitor an audio guide service to the 60 attractions. The CittadellaApp will also include a 360 degree video worked with three-dimensional technology to show the visitor the Citadel from angles that are very difficult to access.
The official opening will be made by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat on the 30th of June at 6.00pm, and then on Saturday, the 9th of July, between 7:30 pm and midnight there will be 60 attractions open to the public at the Citadel, including exhibitions, concerts and performances by Gozitan artists, locals and from overseas.
There will be historical reenactments, street theatre, dance shows on the bastions, film shows and while all activities are aimed for the whole family to enjoy, there will also be places and activities specifically for children, such as a theatrical production about science and areas for traditional Maltese games.
Among the places open to the public will be all Heritage Malta museums, the War shelters, the grain silos, The Gozo Court building and the Cathedral bell tower, two places not normally open to the public, will also be open free of charge.
