Malta Labour Party Leader, Dr Joseph Muscat has said that last nights budget was a two-faced one, which highlighted the inefficiency of the government. Dr Muscat pointed out that there was no mention of the new water and electricity rates, showing that the government was either ashamed of the tariffs it had introduced or wanted the people to forget.
Dr Muscat said that positive elements in the Budget included the incentives for the environment and the elimination of the inheritance tax for people with disability.
Turning to schemes for solar water heaters and photovoltaic panels, Dr Muscat said that although these were positive, the government was trying to fool the Maltese, since only a minority of families would actually benefit from them. “It can take decades for all the Maltese people to make use of the scheme. Only a few people can benefit from it, but all the Maltese people have to pay their taxes,” Dr Muscat said.
Dr Muscat also said that the new taxes on fuel and tourism were a means for the government to hide its inefficiencies, and an excuse for its incompetence.
Regarding the car registration tax, Dr Muscat said that the government would be making €15.5 million out of the new registration tax on cars, double what it was removing. It was using the implementation of an EU directive as an excuse to make more money.
He went on to say that the revision in the income tax bands and the increase in the cost of living were a way to hide the higher utility tariffs, even though this was no compensation.
Dr Muscat concluded by saying that he encouraged all the Maltese people to attend the ‘national manifestation of courage’ against the utility tariffs in Valletta next Sunday.
