A reminder that tomorrow the public in Gozo will be able to view the Implementation of the Cittadella Masterplan in Gozo through the €10.5 million that were invested through EU Funds, during an Open Day for EU-Funded Projects in Gozo and Malta. The other Gozo projects to benefit from EU Funds are within Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria.
The Planning and Priorities Coordination Division (PPCD) within the Ministry for European Affairs and the Implementation of the Electoral Manifesto (MEAIM), in collaboration with the European Commission's Directorate-General Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), said that they have organised this event to demonstrate the results yielded through EU funds in the 2007-2013 programming period to the European citizens.
All sites mentioned hereunder will be opening their museums for free as part of this initiative. By taking part in guided tours, the public will have the opportunity to assimilate more information on the sites which were rehabilitated and made accessible through EU funds, thus uncovering the treasures of our country's heritage and historical attractions.
In Gozo the sites will be open on Sunday, the 8th of May, between 9.30am-3.30pm with free admission:
The historic town of Cittadella has benefited from two different EU funded projects. The restoration of the historical outer walls was part of a more extensive project with an investment of €34.3 million targeting different fortifications in Malta and Gozo, including Valletta, Mdina, Birgu and Senglea.
On the other hand, a separate project focused on the restoration of the inner parts of this fortified town, including the restoration of a number of historical and cultural monuments, the setting up of an Interpretation Centre, the rehabilitation of the ditch and the improved accessibility through its restored paths, piazzas and streets.
This project has enhanced the historical, cultural and recreational experience of this historical town, improving the tourism product of the island of Gozo.
Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria
Victoria, the medieval town of Gozo, has also benefited from a number of different EU-funded projects, including one spearheaded by an NGO setting up a cultural and heritage centre to serve as a venue for exhibiting its rich historical patrimony.
This project, apart from strengthening Gozo's cultural identity, has created a new alternative cultural tourism attraction in Gozo.
In Malta the sites open on Sunday will be Birgu Ditch, Fort St. Angelo and Fortress Builders Museum. For details of tours etc please see here.
