The celebrations started with a parade to Xaghra Basilica, accompanied by the Attard Scout Group band, followed by a mass concelebrated by H. E. Bishop of Gozo Mario Grech.
The headquarters was officially opened by the cutting of a rope with an axe by Group Scout Leader Loraine Borg. Meanwhile a member from each section let free a balloon representing their section’s colours.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled by the Minister for Gozo Dr. Anton Refalo. Towards the end of the opening ceremony a number of awards were given out to a number of Group supporters who give a lot of their time and energy for the good of the Scout Group.
Minister Refalo praised the noble goal of this Movement in guiding these children and youth, while also strengthening the existing values of society
Dr Refalo went on to say that the Ministry for Gozo fully supports this philosophy and noble goal on which the Scouts were founded, and reiterated the commitment that the Ministry will provide all possible help to the Association.
The Minister wished every success to the Scout Movement, while calling for more children and young people to join the Scouts and foster a sense of discipline, strong values, and become responsible citizens. “Values that help develop a complete man – such important values in a society that is constantly changing,” he said.
On the occasion of the opening Group Scout Leader Loraine Borg remarked “We have worked hard over the past years and it has been far from easy. Our success is thanks to the dynamic nature of our group where we managed to work together with energy, enthusiasm and commitment in realising our dream. Having our own Headquarters means having our own space to meet and keep our equipment. It is our second home, a safe haven where members can learn, have fun, create memories and develop holistically into exemplary and responsible citizens.“
A special edition of ‘L-iScout Xaghri’ was also published and distributed on day focusing especially on the headquarters.
Xag?ra Scout Group forms part of The Scout Association of Malta and is one the youngest groups, being reactivated in 2008.
An open day of the headquarters for the public will be held this Sunday 8th May 2016 from 8.30am to 12:30pm.
Xaghra Scout Group forms part of The Scout Association of Malta and has been given its headquarters from the Government in 2012 through a parliamentary resolution. The Group through its volunteers, helpers, supporters, benefactors, local council and Ministry has renovated a very dilapidated 1700s farmhouse through the past four years to serve as their weekly meeting place for their 100 scout members.
The renovation has cost in the range of €90,000, which includes both financial payments and donations in kind.
The Group will now finally have an adequate base from where to promote the social, physical, intellectual, creative, emotional and spiritual formation of its young members.
In Scouting, children experience competitive and non-competitive activities that includes but not limited problem-solving activities and outdoor activities (such as water-sports, cooking, hiking, walking, aerial challenges and much more).
