Update route change information: Last Sunday, the Gozo Greyhounds Sports Club with Gozo Rocks Clean & Green Hikes were on the move again, this time from Sanap Cliffs to Xlendi and back through the Munxar valley to Sannat.
This was an internationally attended hike, said organiser Louis Debattista. “We had Matt, hailing from France, Chris from the UK, Jane from South Africa, four of my family Americans and 4 Gozitans: Mario, Chris, Kyle and myself.”
“The weather looked a little threatening but we only had a few drops of rain while we were hiking. Together our team of volunteers managed to collect 29 bags of recyclables and walked a total of 8.4km.”
The Club said that it is “grateful to the Gozo Minister for giving the go-ahead to Eco-Gozo to support us so we can continue our clean-up hikes, doing what is right for the sake of our island. What is not right is the way people keep dumping trash on our island. WHY? “No dumping/no littering” signs with fines and enforcement would help the situation,” said Louis.
He added that, “a big thank you goes to the Munxar Council for being so responsive and helpful, responding quickly to emails, collecting the recyclables after the hike, and taking care of cleaning the area (a field) we didn’t have access to, but it’s an eyesore. If all the local councils operated the way Munxar did, Gozo would look much better.” Next Sunday’s hike will start from Xlendi up to the cliff to San Rafflu lake to Dwejra and back to Santa Lucija, not Xlendi as previously advised. Louis is asking for as many people as possible to please join them.
“We will have transport from Qala at 1pm and can make westbound stops to pick up just before Xewkija round-about (cemetery) and by Sannat playground. For those driving, we will pass by Sannat at 1:15pm so you can park your car there at the playground and get on the bus. Hope to see you Sunday!”
