Seaplane will not resolve access problems – Gozo Tourism Association

The Gozo Tourism Association is in favour of improved air access between Malta and Gozo but still believes that Gozo should have its own airstrip.

“The idea of a seaplane will not resolve the access issue for a number of reasons,” the association said. There should be a link between the islands all year round and during the day and night, it added.

“Prevailing sea and weather conditions affecting the entrance of Mgarr Harbour, especially when North East, South East and South West winds are blowing, will not provide the ideal landing and take off conditions at sea for a seaplane.”

The association questioned whether the seaplane will be able to operate during hours of darkness and stated that according to aviation experts this would not be possible. The association also pointed out that the Mgarr port is already congested and that the seaplane will only add to the busy traffic.

Furthermore, Gozo bound tourists arriving at Malta International Airport will be forced to take a tour of Malta by coach in order to board the seaplane from the Grand Harbour. This will be almost as time consuming as taking a coach trip to Cirkewwa, added the association.

The association asked why Gozo and its tourism industry are being deprived of the only sustainable, reliable, and consistent air link to Gozo, an airstrip.

The association called on all those who have the well-being of Gozo and tourism at heart to speak out in favour of the airstrip and to provide Gozo with the air access it deserves.

how exactly does having an airstrip serve ‘all those who have the well-being of Gozo’?
A noisy airstrip day and night would totally ruin the quiet, unique, ’slow paced’ attractiveness of Gozo – that is her draw card! it is only the short sighted tourist industry that wants such a thing! Go back to Malta if that’s what you want.

I agree with you 100% here Guiseppa. As a tourist I’m sick and tired of these so-called experts in tourism telling everyone what tourists want. I don’t want an airstrip on Gozo, never have and never will. If they build an airstrip on Gozo I will never use it and in fact will probably say to hell with it and go somewhere else for my holidays.

The one thing that Gozo has going for it is its peace and quiet and the last thing we need are planes taking off and landing countless times a day. We also have to remember that it wouldn’t just be the odd 12 seater full of tourists that would be using it but every Tom Dick and Harry with a private plane.

It would then be only a matter of time before the calls went out for an even longer runway to accommodate even bigger aircraft. Hands off Gozo. We like the island just the way it is.

    Airstrip for gozo? How insane.

Think Ryanair would be interested in running a low cost between Malta and Gozo?

Talk about a non-self sustaining project.
