Alternattiva Demokratika – the Green Party has said that it welcomes the Prime Minister’s declaration that he will be taking steps to halt once and for all the abuse of migrants being carried out by those who are employing them without respecting their basic rights.
This was stated by Carmel Cacopardo Deputy Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party when commenting on Joseph Muscat’s speech at Sliema over the weekend.
It has been known for ages, added Cacopardo, that some “employ” a number of migrants every day by picking them up with a van at Marsa, “and subsequently paying them, if they are actually paid, insignificant amounts of money. This is an insult to the dignity due to every person who works who has the right to adequate payment for his work, irrespective of his origin or the colour of his skin,” added Cacopardo.
“In addition to being a vilification of the dignity of every working man in Malta,” added Cacopardo, “the failure of the state to intervene so far, signifies that the rights and achievements of working man and women are also under threat.”
AD, concluded Cacopardo, hopes that the Prime Minister will implement what he has promised at the earliest.
