Fatal blow to environment in Munxar – AD

The illegal construction of a concrete road on the edge of Sanap cliffs in Munxar, in the vicinity of Ta’ Cenc, has led to the irrevocable destruction of indigenous flora, fauna, fossilized rocks and natural habitat.

Mr. Victor Galea, Alternattiva Demokratika?s General Secretary and Spokesperson for the AD Gozo Regional Committee asked, “is this the way forward for up-market tourism and sustainable employment in Gozo? Who is going to pay for this outrage now that a Stop Enforcement Notice is imminent? The tax payer?”

MEPA is now duty bound to identify and institute proceedings against those responsible for authorizing this brazen breach of the law.

Following reports from visiting trekkers, AD pursued enquiries with some of the present members of the Munxar local council who confirmed that no reference to these violations had ever been made during council meetings.

Referring to this outrage, AD Chairperson Dr. Harry Vassallo said that “given that a local council election is scheduled to take place in March, Munxar and Xlendi residents deserve nothing less than full disclosure by the Munxar Mayor on this blatant transgression of planning laws in conjunction with comprehensive, transparent accountability in this regard. It would be ironic if it had been proposed to use public funds to cover the expense of these illegal works”.

“This is an irresponsible act by the Munxar Mayor, which is a blatant, opportunistic and cheap move in order to gain votes from bird trappers and not lose his seat.”
